Synopsis:

The witch was who you would call a witch.

Wrapped up in a black robe and stirring the contents of her cauldron, cackling “Eeeheehehee!” all the while – she belonged to that category of so-called witches.

A face that was deeply carved with wrinkles. An aged body that was appraised as the hag amongst hags, more hags, and even more hags.

To the side of that witch, the third son of the local feudal lord came along without bringing any companions.

Let’s see, the splendid young lord’s reason for his “esteemed” consultation is…

※ A series of short episodic stories.

Comments: This is by the same author of Light Beyond (bits and pieces translated here by Kukki). One thing I really adore about this series besides the characters is that a) it’s organized into “short” self-contained episodic arcs, and b) how it’s written. The third-person narrative is much easier to relate to, and the grammatical structures are solid, albeit more complex here and there. The individual chapters are also quite long (something I enjoy as a reader, not so much as a translator!)

The witch is a very good character. Even when she doesn’t actually speak, you still get a good sense of her exasperation with Orélie. She also has sick ice burns. Orélie is also preciously earnest and ridiculous on a scale that I’ve really yet to have seen, so please look forward to it. If you’re looking for something more low-key and fairy-tale like, I would say this counts.
